Hopes for new school staff guidance for education of FASD children

People in teaching jobs could soon be given specific advice aimed at helping them provide the best education to pupils with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), it has emerged.

This is because the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) has advertised funding for researchers who can look into how this condition affects the learning of children, reports the Observer.

"FASD presents challenges for teachers and other professionals that may require innovative approaches to education," a spokesman for the organisation explained to the paper.

The condition, which can cause a range of physical, behavioural and cognitive disabilities, can be triggered when a mother drinks alcohol while pregnant.

In advertising for a researcher, the TDA hopes that it will soon be able to help school staff provide FASD children with the education they need.

People in teaching jobs are being issued with new guidance on combating cyberbullying and bullying outside of school, the Department for Children, Schools and Families announced last week.
