Elite teaching posts advertised as council looks to turnaround primaries

At least ten new posts for 'elite teachers' are to be established in Northamptonshire as part of the local council's efforts to improve primary school standards, it has been announced.

Under the new education recruitment drive, Northampton County Council is looking to employ professionals with proven track records of leadership and turning schools around, with the teaching jobs to be advertised nationally over the coming days.

This comes as local authorities work to address below-average performances in the county's primary schools after a recent Ofsted report found pupils between the ages of seven and 11 were performing relatively poorly.

Councillor Joan Kirkbride told the Northampton Chronicle: "We're looking for highly-talented individuals who want to do something challenging and rewarding.

"While the main aim of the scheme is to ensure individual schools will benefit from the expertise and experience of outstanding teachers, we're pleased that there will be an overall benefit for the whole county of attracting yet more first class people."

Towards the end of last month, the Guardian revealed that web-based skills could form a core part of the new primary schools curriculum.
