The important role that those in teaching jobs will play in helping to create "great" 21st-century schools has been highlighted by a former education secretary.

Baroness Estelle Morris, who now chairs the British Council for School Environments' (BCSE) Great Schools Enquiry, wrote in the Times Educational Supplement about teachers' role in the Building School for the Future scheme.

Research conducted by the Teachers Support Network and the BCSE found that the idea that learning environment effects pupil behaviour is supported by 90 per cent of teachers.

And according to the former politician, school staff will be central to the success of the school rebuilding initiative because they will help to "explore the issues that really matter and identify solutions".

She noted that the BCSE is keen to involve teachers from across the education system in the scheme.

The length of time it would take to complete the Building Schools for the Future programme was "underestimated" by the government, according to a report published by the National Audit Office earlier this year.
