School staff in the north-east of England are to be entered for a competition that rewards them for their hard work.

Those in teaching jobs across the region could be nominated for the North East School Awards run by newspaper The Journal, which are being held for the third time.

Science Learning Centre North East is sponsoring the most inspirational primary school teacher award.

A spokesman for the body told the news source that the organisation wants to "encourage creativity and innovation in primary teaching".

"Through our work with primary teachers across the region we recognise the important role they play in building the foundations of curious, enthusiastic, happy learners," he added.

The winners of the award this year, which will be presented at a ceremony in July, will win £250 for their school, while two runners-up will be given £100.

Earlier this year approximately 100 members of school staff were recognised for outstanding achievement in the New Year Honours list.
