Professionals interested in a career change to a teaching job could have the chance to shorten their training time, it has emerged.

The government is today due to unveil a new proposal that would see some being eligible to take part in a six-month training programme, down from the usual year.

These plans have been designed to attract more people to consider becoming members of school staff as the credit crunch continues to bite.

Furthermore, those who have had several years professional experience in fields such as financial services or hi-tech industries could be eligible to apply to be part of a new fast-track school leadership scheme.

It is expected that schools minister Jim Knight will announce that this opportunity will be open to up to 200 people and could see participants become headteachers within four years.

Approximately ten per cent of workers are currently considering changing their career to a teaching job, according to a survey recently conducted by the Training and Development Agency for Schools.
