Lollipop man's job saved by students

One lollipop man will be having a very happy New Year thanks to a team of campaigning pupils who have saved him from forced retirement.

Former policeman Ken Morley, 75, had been told by council officials in Preston, Lancashire, that he would be required to retire as he was no longer covered by the authority's insurance policy.

However, upon hearing the news teachers and pupils from St Andrew's Primary School, Ashton-on-Ribble, launched a year-long struggle to save their popular lollipop man, eventually persuading council leaders to change their minds.

Mr Morley, who was widowed three years ago, told the Telegraph: "I can't thank children staff and teachers enough for all the backing they have given me.

"I was so pleased they helped out. This job means a lot to me - it gave me reason to get out of bed in the morning after Sybill died."

St Andrew's is a Church of England-run primary school which was first established in 1842.
