Headteachers dominate OBE honours list

A total of 20 education professionals from England will be awarded the Order of the British Empire, Officer ranking (OBE), after being selected for inclusion in the New Year's honours list.

Headteachers form the majority of those selected, while university vice-chancellors, special needs teachers, college principals, specialist education programme managers and a union leader have also made the grade.

Eight headteachers - four primary leaders, one high school head, one sixth form college leader, one early years headteacher and one autism specialist - are to receive awards in recognition of their services to education.

Three former university pro-vice-chancellors have also been selected, alongside five further education heads.

Dr Anthony Bernard Best has also been recognised for services to the education of deafblind children, as has Marc Jaffrey for music education, Peter Carne for his management of the Growing Schools programme and Stephen Szemerenyi of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL).

ASCL is the only professional association and trade union in the UK which exclusively represents the interests of secondary school and college leaders.
