A dozen school projects across England are to benefit from £800 million of funding channelled through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme.

The money will be used to build completely new schools in some circumstances, while other projects will involve refurbishing existing classrooms and learning facilities.

All the projects due to benefit from the scheme will have entered the procurement process by March next year and a range of local authorities, including Darlington in the north-east and Devon in the south-west will be included in the initiative for the first time.

Tim Byles, chief executive of BSF delivery body Partnerships for Schools, said: "With over 110,000 pupils already benefitting from BSF investment, [this] announcement will boost this growing figure over the coming years."

Nearly 120 schools that have benefitted from BSF funding will be opened during the current financial year.

In other education news, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust has recommended that subjects such as history and geography be taught in French to encourage more pupils to choose to study foreign languages for their GCSEs, reports the BBC.
