A selection of pupils at a secondary school in London have been given iPhones by their teachers and are being encouraged to use them for learning purposes.
Staff at Gumley House Convent School in Hounslow have given the smartphones to 30 pupils in years seven to 11 and they will be encouraged to use the phones extensively over the next seven months, reports PublicTechnology.net.
The intention of the project, run by Professor Michael Gibson and arranged through Brentford City Learning Centre and technology solutions provider Academia, is to see how smartphones can be successfully integrated into the classroom for the benefit of education.
Stephen Byrne, assistant headteacher at Gumley House, told the website: "The girls are already downloading applications for document management, language translations and anatomy study."
He added that monthly prizes are being offered for the girls who use the phones for the most creative educational purposes.
In other news, a new report has accused academy schools of pursuing higher league table positions by encouraging pupils to take easier subjects that are worth multiple GCSEs.
