North-east pupils dig deep for community

Charity workers in the north-east were given a helping hand by a group of secondary school pupils, who got stuck in to a local gardening project, it has been reported.

According to the York Press, the year 11 students took a few hours out from their studies at the city's Joseph Rowntree School to help community group Garden Able build a raised bed.

An ongoing project, Garden Able aims to make outside space accessible to local disabled people.

Marit Parker, a key organiser for the project, told the newspaper: "The great thing about this Garden Able is how inclusive it is of all social groups. It is a real community project."

The horseshoe-shaped bed made by the students was designed to make gardening more achievable for disabled people.

According to the school's website, 72 per cent of pupils at Joseph Rowntree school achieved five or more passes at grades A* to C this summer.
