Intervention project to tackle south-east child poverty

Vulnerable children in East Sussex are to receive extra help from local services, the government has announced.

The county is one of 20 regions selected by the Department for Children Schools and Families to benefit from a £6.5 million programme targeting at risk young people.

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo is to announce the details of the Child Poverty Family Intervention Projects today (November 4th) at the inaugural National Think Family Conference in London.

The projects are devised to address the underlying problems preventing families from moving out of poverty - such as drug and alcohol dependency, domestic violence and mental health problems.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ms Primarolo said early intervention would help prevent vulnerable children from falling into the same patterns of behaviour as their parents.

In related news, the National Association for Primary Education's general secretary John Coe has warned that the government's parental advisor programme has a "whiff of condescension about it", which could risk alienating poorer families.
