Midlands teens learn new life skills

Nottingham teachers are to take part in a new scheme focusing on giving teenagers more consistent advice on personal issues they may face.

The 11-16 Life Skills project will aim to reduce teenage pregnancies, anti-social behaviour and drug and alcohol problems.

An estimated 3,000 young people will be involved in the programme, launched ahead of government plans to make Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education mandatory from 2011.

The move was announced in April following an independent review led by Sir Alasdair Macdonald.

Launching the scheme, city councillor David Mellen said it would give Nottingham's schools a chance to "develop tailor-made packages that meets the needs of their pupils".

He added the work would complement projects already in operation under the Teenage Pregnancy Taskforce.
