£15m boost for north-west schools

Schools in Lancashire are to benefit from a £15 million government funding boost.

The money will be spent in Blackburn and Darwen schools on improving school buildings and updating IT facilities.

Part of the money will go towards a £1.3 million revamp of Darwen's Avondale Primary School, where a new roof and corridor will be complemented by a multi-media suite and replacement classrooms.

Commenting on the news local councillor Chris Thayne said the improvements would have a "huge impact" on helping local children achieve their potential.

"Those crucial years in early education and in primary school set the foundation stones for children's education and that's why this investment is so important," he added.

The funding was released as part of the government's 15-year Building Schools for the Future programme, which aims to rebuild or renew nearly every school in England.
