According to the Birmingham Post, more than 40 unregulated Islamic schools are currently operating in the Midlands city.

Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood told the newspaper: "At the moment madrassas are not regulated, which is quite astonishing.

"In this day and age the welfare and safety of our children should be our top concern."

The news source claims that the only legal requirements mosque schools currently need to fulfill are obtaining planning permission and safety approval from the fire service.

Madrassas typically take pupils for early evening and weekend lessons, where young people can study the Koran in addition to regular schooling.

Last month saw the government announce extra funding for these part-time schools to encourage the teaching of Islam in citizenship.
