A national education awards ceremony has singled out a Yorkshire teacher for praise due to his work with children with special educational needs.

Edward Vickerman won the SSAT Award for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year at the annual Teaching Awards, held in London on Sunday (October 25th).

Head of business and teacher of business and enterprise, at the Freeston Business and Enterprise College, in Normanton near Wakefield, judges say his work is at the "cutting edge of teaching".

They described Mr Vickerman as an inspiring role model for all his pupils and particularly those who share his dyslexia.

Other teachers to win accolades included Elaine Loughran, of St Joseph's Primary School in Antrim, who won the award for Special Needs Teacher of the Year and Stourport High School's Liz Quinn, who took the prize for Headteacher of the Year.

Nominations are already open to students and staff inspired by a particular colleague or teacher, who want to see them rewarded at next year's ceremony.
