New careers strategy unveiled

Young people are to benefit from a new careers advice strategy launched yesterday (October 26th) by the government.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families' scheme has the backing of Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of top north-west football team Manchester United.

Sir Alex praised the government's focus on offering apprenticeships for young people, saying they offer a "real route" into work for those unsuited to university.

Under the strategy, universities will form stronger links with primary schools to educate children about work and higher education.

Two new national mentoring champions will increase partnerships between schools and businesses, while disadvantaged and disabled young people get improved access to work experience.

Online networks and resources will also be harnessed to offer a more modern service, with a presence on YouTube, Facebook, blogs and forums.

The move is in line with the government's Raising Participation Age programme, a pilot scheme aiming to encourage all school leavers to continue learning up to 18, launched earlier this month.
