South-west schools get safer journeys

Somerset children will now have a safer journey home from school thanks to a new road safety initiative, says a local report.

According to This is Bristol, Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust has issued reflective vests to schools across North Somerset in a bid to offer youngsters more protection when crossing the road.

Officers will also visit schools across the county to teach children how to get safely to and from school.

Speaking on a visit to St Nicolas Chantry School in Clevedon, police community support officer Elle French told the local news source: "The jackets are fantastic and the children are so much more visible on pavements and crossing the road; the children seem to like them too."

Government figures state that an average of 37 under-16s are killed on the roads every year. Its Think campaign aims to reduce this number by half by 2010.
