Tory assembly member for South Wales Central Andrew Davies asked minister Edwina Hart: "At what stage are the discussions regarding a pilot scheme for this in South Wales?"
During an assembly debate, Mr Davies noted that basic testing in schools could help detect serious problems at an early stage.
"It also means children struggling with tasks like seeing the blackboard can then get the help they need before it impacts on their learning or confidence," he added.
Children in England have their eyes routinely tested shortly after birth and again before starting school. All those under 16 are entitled to free eye care.
In the future the NHS hopes to give all children an orthoptic eye test during their first year at full-time school; something that is already happening in some parts of the country.
