Supply Teaching

Register for day to day or long term teaching jobs today Register Today

The types of work we are able to offer our registered candidates can be classified into:

  • Long-term supply work (four or more consecutive weeks at the same school)
  • Day-to-day supply work (less than four weeks possibly at a number of different schools)
  • Permanent placements (where a school takes the candidate onto their own contract)

In reality the candidates who register with us frequently take on work in all three categories at some stage. Staff working on a day-to-day supply basis often find their bookings turn into long-term positions and ultimately permanent roles. Others prefer to stick with the variety and flexibility offered by to day-to-day supply.

History of supply agencies

Teaching is a highly skilled profession where individual teachers are fully occupied teaching children whist adhering to a complex legal framework to ensure child protection.

Few schools have the luxury of excess teaching capacity and so any problems with teacher absences leads to an urgent demand for appropriate cover.

The teacher supply industry started originally through direct relationships between occasionally available teachers and schools. More recently LEAs provided a matching service until budget restrictions and school choice led to the emergence and expanse of teacher supply agencies.  Since 1991 supply agencies have been servicing an increasing proportion of the supply market.

Why have supply agencies grown?

As private sector companies, supply agencies operate in a harsh environment and those who don't satisfy market needs swiftly disappear. The successful agencies thrive on a commitment to quality of service, impeccable organisation and sheer hard work.

Here at Teaching Personnel, our consultants are continually striving to market our candidates to appropriate schools for appropriate positions and we never take our foot of the pedal. We know that our teachers wish to teach and that it is our job to find you the work that you want. This we never forget.

What types of supply work are available?

Supply cover is essentially driven by teacher absences due to sickness, training and unfilled vacancies. Maternity and school trips also play a part. The supply work available extends from half a days cover with thirty minutes notice to long-term placements that can extend for years.
